First author on an article in JAMA Pediatrics that received international media coverage, providing novel evidence that the impact of indoor air pollution goes beyond respiratory health and likely affects early childhood growth. Designed and conducted the analysis of a longitudinal study of air pollution and perinatal and childhood outcomes across two provinces of the Czech Republic, funded by the Health Effects Institute.

The effects of non-optimal temperature and air pollution exposure during pregnancy on perinatal and neonatal mortality in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. Investigates how environmental exposures during pregnancy influence adverse outcomes in large, nationally representative samples, quantifying the proportion of perinatal and neonatal mortality attributable to specific environmental exposures. Implements novel machine learning methods to achieve its aims.

Vulnerable Newborns Measurement Collaboration, Phase 2. Investigates stillbirth, small-for-gestational age, large-for-gestational age, preterm birth, and their combinations, to identify small and vulnerable newborns. Explores factors associated with the prevalence and mortality risk of these groups, focusing on maternal factors such as age, nutritional status and place of delivery, and infant factors such as sex and multiple gestation, using hospital-based data from Kenya and Uganda.

COVID-19 and adverse perinatal outcomes. Examined associations between maternal COVID-19 during pregnancy and several adverse perinatal outcomes in a large Mexican cohort. Found that severe COVID-19 was associated with large-for-gestational age infants, and that severe disease may also have increased the risk of other adverse perinatal outcomes. COVID-19 in the first trimester was associated with fetal death, suggesting it could be a high-risk period.

A meta-regression and analysis of attributable global burden for 204 countries and territories. In 2019, reducing ambient and household PM2.5 exposure during pregnancy to a minimum risk level could have prevented almost 2.8 million low birth weight and 5.9 million preterm birth infants globally.
